Optimizing road underpass design to maximize use by a freshwater turtle (<scp><i>Chelodina oblonga</i></scp>)

چکیده

Roads affect the connectivity of habitat and inhibit movements animals as a result road avoidance road-related mortalities. Freshwater turtles are particularly vulnerable to mortality on roads, females must often cross them when they leave aquatic environment nest. Ecopassages designed enable safe movement across roads by wild may be an effective measure reduce adverse impacts. Limited information exists, however, design criteria for freshwater turtles. A willingness-to-utilize study was used assess factors that influence use tunnel underpass southwestern snake-necked turtle (Chelodina oblonga), species whose populations declining, in part, through mortalities nesting females. Female C. oblonga were sourced from urban wetland placed enclosure with exits varying lengths (12 25 m) lighting treatments (‘light’ ‘dark’) conditions would promote successful passage. Generalized linear modelling showed light had significantly increased likelihood faster passage both 12 m tunnels than dark treatments. Tunnel length no effect either success or rate This provides first account optimize mortality, contributing conservation management more generally.

Optimizing Population Variability to Maximize Benefit

Variability is inherent in any population, regardless whether the population comprises humans, plants, biological cells, or manufactured parts. Is the variability beneficial, detrimental, or inconsequential? This question is of fundamental importance in manufacturing, agriculture, and bioengineering. This question has no simple categorical answer because research shows that variability in a pop...

Optimizing Irrigation Schedule to Maximize Water Use Efficiency of Hibiscus sabdariffa under Shalatien Conditions

A substantial experiment was conducted throughout two consecutive growing seasons of 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 at the experimental station of Shalatien, South – east of Egypt to elucidate the optimizing irrigation schedule to maximize water use efficiency of Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa., under moisture stress. This work was accomplished by designing 75 experimental units with split plot design. ...

Optimizing shipping-fee schedules to maximize e-tailer profits

Shipping-fee charges by online retailers have been known to impact customers' order incidence and cart size. While the importance of managing shipping fees is well documented, few studies have provided normative guidelines for e-tailers to determine optimal shipping-fee schedules. This paper provides two nonlinear mixed-integer programming models to optimize e-tailers' shipping-fee charges for ...
